Burnham-on-Sea sits right next to Brean on the Somerset coast, but has a distinctly different character — a proper seaside town with its own pier, high street and the UK’s shortest pier, rather than Brean’s more park-dense strip.

Burnham vs Brean

If you want a caravan holiday with an actual town to walk into — shops, a pier, a promenade — Burnham has more of that than Brean; if beachfront amusement parks are the priority, Brean is the stronger pick. Many visitors base themselves at one and visit the other.

The famous lighthouse

Burnham’s low lighthouse, built on stilts directly on the beach, is one of the most-photographed landmarks on this stretch of coast and a good marker for orientating yourself along the seafront.

Tides to know about

The Bristol Channel here has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world — check tide times before planning a beach day, since the sea can be a long walk out at low tide.
