The Lake District is a classic dog-walking destination — fells, lakeshore paths and forest trails give plenty of options, but a few local rules are worth knowing before you go.

Lambing season restrictions

Much of the Lake District’s fellside is grazing land, and dogs must be kept on leads around livestock, with particularly strict expectations during lambing season (roughly March to May) — some landowners ask for dogs to be left at accommodation entirely near lambing fields at this time.

Lake access and wild swimming

Dogs are generally welcome to swim in the lakes themselves, but check specific rules around busier tourist spots and boat-launch areas, which sometimes restrict dog access during peak season.

Choosing your base

A lodge near one of the quieter lakes (Ullswater, Buttermere) rather than the busiest tourist honeypots (central Windermere, Bowness) often makes for an easier dog-friendly stay with less crowding.
